If I want to be a successful coach, where should I start? It may be confusing since no requirements are needed for education or experience to open a coaching practice. Also, there are many coach training programs, most of which are pretty expensive. Without oversight, how would someone know if their time, energy, and money are well spent?
Backus (2018) lists his research findings as to how coaches learned or gained their coaching competencies:
● Being mentored
● Receiving continuing education/professional development
● Becoming more aware, experienced, and confident
● Feedback
● Increased intuition
● Experience of failure
● Reflection
● Risk-taking
● Client success
● Strong emotional reactions
● Peer support
● Training other coaches (p. 188-190).
